Aromatic hydrocarbons are organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen in the form of an unsaturated, usually hexagonal ring structure. The compounds can be single ring, or double, triple, or multiple fused rings. They are important materials produced by the chemical industry. They are used as industrial solvents, fuel additives, chemical intermediates, and polymer feedstocks and users need extensive physical and chemical data to ensure production efficiency and quality. Benzenoid aromatics are cyclic compounds made up of one or more benzene like rings in which the pi electrons are conjugated. The different kinds of benzenoid aromatics are benzene, napthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene. Non-benzenoid aromatic compounds that have ring systems are larger or smaller than benzene rings. All aromatic hydrocarbons both benzenoid and non-benzenoid are resonance stabilized. They are water insoluble. They are also carcinogenic (cancer forming) if exposed with sufficient concentration and exposure time. They all undergo electrophilic aromatic substitutions. The extensive application of aromatic hydrocarbons found in variety of industries including dyes, drugs, semiconductors, fluorescent reagents, chemiluminescent reagents, and as polychromatic and anti-static additives for plastics.
