After the death of an animal, what remained out of its decomposed
body was a carcass of bone intact and untouched by the atmospheric vagaries. This
was probably the first encounter of man with bones. Overwhelmed by its intricate
design, aesthetic and design his journey into the wondrous world of bone art began.
Initially, he used bone as a durable and elegant whip to control
domestic animals and ward off threats. Gradually bone donned the
shapes of his various instruments and began to grow as a reliable
material for his weapons. The rigid and solid properties of the
bone made them ideal to fit into his armoury.
Ages after successfully
introducing bone into his armoury it began to expand its utility and found usage
as his regular day0today tools. Carvers found it"s a flexible medium to transform
their creative visualization to reality. And thus gradually the wonderful art
of bane crafts began to evolve. Captivating jewelry, combs, beads, icons, eye
liner, necklaces, bracelets etc were a few common bone products popular in those
times.
Today bone crafts is an individual industry. A vast range of products
are being churned by artists throughout the globe. India also has a flourishing
history of bone crafts. Different states flaunt their distinctive designs and
patterns.
