Oxygen

Oxygen is one of the basic chemical elements. In its most common form, this oxygen gas is odorless, colorless, slightly heavier than air and sparingly soluble in water. Oxygen forms 21% of the atmosphere by volume and is obtained by liquefaction and fractional distillation. The atmosphere of mars contains about 0.15% oxygen. The element oxygen and its compounds make up 49.2%, by weight, of the earth's crust. About two thirds of the human body and nine tenths of water is oxygen. In the laboratory it can be prepared by the electrolysis of water or by heating potassium chlorate with manganese dioxide as a catalyst.

Oxygen is the third most abundant element found in the sun, and it plays a part in the carbon-nitrogen cycle, the process once thought to give the sun and stars their energy. Oxygen under excited conditions is responsible for the bright red and yellow-green colors of the aurora borealis.

Oxygen is one of the life-sustaining elements on earth and is needed by all animals. Plants and animals rely on oxygen for respiration. Hospitals frequently prescribe oxygen for patients with respiratory ailments. The brain cannot survive without oxygen; the cessation of breathing will cause unconsciousness in a few minutes, and death soon afterwards.

Oxygen deficiency causes serious health problems. Symptoms of oxygen deficiency include: acid stomach, bacterial, viral and parasitic infections, bronchial problems, chronic hostility, circulation problems, depression, dizziness, fatigue, irrational behavior, irritation, lowered immunity to colds, flu and infections, memory loss, muscle aches, overall bodily weakness, poor digestion, tumors and deposit buildups.

Oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen as a therapeutic modality. Oxygen therapy benefits the patient by increasing the supply of oxygen to the lungs and thereby increasing the availability of oxygen to the body tissues.

Oxygen is also used in many industrial, commercial, medical, and scientific applications. It is used in blast furnaces to make steel, and is an important component in the production of many synthetic chemicals, including ammonia, alcohols, and various plastics. Oxygen and acetylene are combusted together to provide the very high temperatures needed for welding and metal cutting. For industrial purposes, this industrial gas is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air and can be applied in the metallurgical processes, in high temperature flames and in breathing apparatus. Combined oxygen element occurs in water, vegetables, and animal tissues, in all rocks and in many minerals.

Ozone (o3) is an allotrope of oxygen. Ozone is formed from electrical discharges or ultraviolet light acting on o2. Ozone is an important component of the atmosphere, which is vital in preventing harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun from reaching the earth's surface. Aerosols in the atmosphere have a detrimental effect on the ozone layer.
