Antimony

Antimony, the inorganic chemical, in its elementary form, is a silvery white, brittle, fusible, crystalline solid that vaporizes in low temperatures. Commercial form of antimony element is generally ingots, broken pieces, granules and cast cakes and other forms include powder, shot and single crystals. This antimony is increasingly being used in the semiconductor industry in the production of diodes, infrared detectors and half-effect devices. As an alloy, this chemical material semi-metal greatly increases lead's hardness and mechanical strength. In addition to this, the most important application of this antimony is as a hardener in lead for storage batteries. Antimony compounds in the form of oxides, sulfides sodium antimonite and antimonite trychloride are used in the making of flameproofing compounds, ceramic enamels, glass, paints and pottery. Antimony trioxide, one of the most important of antimony compounds which is very effective in flame-retardant formulations that includes children's clothing, toys, aircraft and automobile seat covers.
