Million tonnes of calcium chloride are produced all over the world to meet the increasing demand of the industries. It is basically a compound of calcium and chloride that is soluble in water and remains solid in the room temperature. This chemical product can be produced directly from the limestone but large amount of calcium chloride is produced as a by-product of the solvay process. In different packets and containers, this chemical compound is available in the market. Common application of this calcium chloride includes the refrigeration plants, ice and dust control on roads and in cement industries. As calcium chloride is strongly hygroscopic, it is used to dry air as well as other gases and organic liquids. Unlike other sodium compounds, this liquid calcium chloride is harmless to plants and works well under lower temperatures. This calcium compound is applied as a bonding agent in the cements and as an additive in the plastics. Other uses of these chemicals are done in the field of food processing units, especially in the making of pickles to give a salty taste without increasing the sodium content.
