Xylene

Xylene c6h4(ch3)2, is colorless, oily, liquid aromatic hydrocarbon used extensively as a solvent, obtained from coal tar, wood tar, and sometimes from petroleum. Metaxylene, paraxylene and thoxylene are the three types of xylenes. xylenes are present in products such as petrol other fuels and coal tar. Xylenes are used for the manufacture of a large number of intermediaries, used to produce many items, indispensable to our health and safety such as detergent, paint etc. Xylenes are also used in dye and perfume industry. Short-term exposure of people to high levels of xylene can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat; difficulty in breathing; impaired function of the lungs; delayed response to a visual stimulus; impaired memory; stomach discomfort; and possible changes in the liver and kidneys. Long term exposure of people to high levels of xylene can cause effect on nervous system, such as headaches, lack of muscle coordination, dizziness, confusion, and changes in one's sense of balance.
