Crude oil is a thick, dark brown or greenish liquid that exists at the upper strata of the earth's crust. This petroleum product consists of a complex mixture of various hydrocarbons, largely of the alkaline series, but many vary much in appearance and composition. This crude oil product is used mostly, by volume, for producing fuel oil and gasoline (petrol), both important "primary energy" sources. Petroleum is also the raw material for many chemical products, including solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics. 88% of all petroleum extracted is processed as fuel; the other 12% is converted into other materials such as plastic. Several of the products that are derived from crude oil, such as naphtha, gasoil, lpg and ethane, can themselves be used as inputs or feedstocks in the production of petrochemicals. Refining crude oil produces variety of fuel oils that include naphtha, gasoline, kerosene and others. A wide range of sub-items like perfumes and insectides are ultimately derived from this chemical compound. This crude oil including light crude oil, heavy crude oil, sweet crude oil, sour crude oil and others are also available in the market.
