Batteries are widely used as a source of direct-current electrical energy in automobiles, boats, aircraft, ships, portable electric/electronic equipment, and lighting equipment. In some cases, it is used as only source of power, while others, they can be used as secondary or standby power source. Batteries use a chemical reaction to do work on charge and produce a voltage between their output terminals. They consists of a number of cells assembled in a common container and connected together to function as a source of electrical power. Carbon-zinc batteries are widely used for general purpose, industrial, penlight and novelty, and military applications. Lead-acid battery is used in automobiles as the electrodes are made of lead and lead-oxide with a strong acidic electrolyte. Lithium battery is used for cameras, lithium-ion batteries for laptops and cell phones, zinc-mercury oxide batteries for hearing aids, silver-zinc battery is used in aeronautical applications because the power-to-weight ratio is good. Metal chloride battery is used for electric vehicles. Mercury cells are used for calculators, wristwatches etc. They are available in different voltage ranges and spectrum sizes.
