Arc lamps produce light by maintaining an electric arc across a gap between two conductors; light comes from the heated ends of the conductors, usually carbon rods as well as from the arc itself. Arc lamps are used in applications requiring great brightness, as in searchlights, large film projectors, and floodlights. High-intensity mercury arc lamps have wider applications in non-destructive testing, leak detection, industrial inspection, dye penetrant inspection and theatrical lighting. They contain high intensive uv lamps for effective lighting. The mercury-xenon arc lamps are widely used in industrial applications requiring ultra violet wavelengths. Mercury lamps have predominantly used in scientific and technical applications. They are available in watts ranging from 50 to 3500 watts. Lamps rated at less than 200 watts are widely used in applications such as fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence endoscopy, optical waveguide applications, schlieren photography, hologram projection etc. Various types of arc lamps are mercury lamps, mercury vapor, xenon, mercury-xenon, short arc lamps etc. Mercury lamps contain a low-pressure gas fill, typically argon and mercury.
