Relays are electrical switches that open and close under the control of another electrical circuit. In the original form, the switch is operated by an electromagnet to open or close one or many sets of contacts. The relays take an advantage of the fact that when electricity flows through a coil, it becomes an electromagnet. The relays operate mechanically, so it cannot operate at high speed. Relays are electromechanical device, which permit a small amount of current to control a much larger amount of current. Relays generally contain a coil and set of contacts. Current flowing through the coil of the relay creates a magnetic field, which attracts a lever and changes the switch contacts. The coil current can be on or off so relays have two switch positions and they are double throw switches. Spectrum applications of relays include electric vehicles and rapid transit, undersea cable branching systems, scientific & test equipment, silicon wafer processing equipment, oil well down hole applications, battery backup and ups systems. High voltage relays transfer power in high voltage, in medical equipment such as defibrillators, in aerospace applications, like high frequency antenna couplers and radar and in commercial applications like electric vehicles and rapid transit. Electromechanical relays have applications in automated test equipment (ate). Reed relays and solid-state relays have applications in matrix and multiplexes modules. Time delay relays and solid-state timers include input controls and displays. Output specifications include the switch type, number of contacts, contact configuration, and pole and throw specifications. Electromechanical relays are devices that complete or interrupt a circuit by physically moving electrical contacts to touch each other. Electromechanical relays involve an energizing and a contact circuit. The coil is on the energizing side and the relay contacts are on the contact side. When the relay coil is energized, current flows through the coil, creating a magnetic field. Reed relays are based on reed switches and consist of two ferromagnetic and specially shaped blades or reeds. In the reed relays reed switch is mounted inside a coil. The reed switch is an electrical switch operated by an applied magnetic field. The reeds in the reed relays are positioned in a hermetically sealed glass tube with a gap between them that may be dry or contains a pool of mercury. Mercury filled reed relays are used in high load current applications. The contacts are isolated from the outside environment, which protects them from contamination. The reed relays simply enclose the switch in a protective housing that allows it to be attached to a printed circuit board. Solid state relays are semiconductor devices that can be used instead of mechanical relays to switch electricity to a load in several applications. Solid state relays are purely electronic devices, normally composed of a low current control side and a high current load side. Many solid state relays feature electrical isolation in thousands of volts between the control and the load side.
