Arresters play a big role in protecting people and equipment from abnormally high transient voltages, which can be lightning, and electromagnetic induction. These arresters are designed with defined surge limiting characteristics. When an abnormal voltage on a line touches that defined level a sparkover or breakdown occurs within the gas tube arrester. That same surge is redirected and the people and electric equipment is saved. Arrester models vary both in dimension and also in electrical characteristics. It is essential that while choosing arresters, one should consider the requirements of the concerned application and in accordance choose an appropriate arrester. Some types of arresters available today are- low voltage arresters- arresters that are used in low voltage overhead lines, consumer in house supplies distribution transformers and other systems. Medium voltage arresters- used in both procelain and polymeric housing. High voltage arresters- used in applications upto 800kv.
