Roller Bearings

One of the earliest and best-known roller bearings are sets of logs laid on the ground with a large stone block on top. As the stone is pulled, the logs roll along the ground with little sliding friction. As each log comes out the back, it is moved to the front where the block then rolls on to it. You can imitate such a bearing by placing several pens or pencils on a table and placing your hand on top of them.

The roller bearings manufactured today highly strong and durable and work effectively in highly demanding conditions. Today one can choose from a long range of ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, spherical roller bearings, spherical thrust roller bearings, taper roller bearings, needle bearing, linear bearings and various other types of roller bearings.

Roller bearings have the advantage of a good tradeoff between cost, size, weight, carrying capacity, durability, accuracy, friction, and so on. Other bearing designs are often better on one specific attribute, but worse in most other attributes, although fluid bearings can sometimes simultaneously outperform on carrying capacity, durability, accuracy, friction, rotation rate and sometimes cost. Only plain bearings have as wide use as roller bearings.

There are many types of roller bearings, each tuned for a specific kind of load and with specific advantages and disadvantages. A particularly common kind of roller bearings is the ball bearings. Ball bearings usually mean bearing assembly which use spherical bearing balls as the rolling elements. For lightly-loaded ball bearings, balls offer lower friction than rollers. Ball bearings can operate when the bearing races are misaligned. Ball bearings tend to have lower load capacity for their size than other kinds of rolling-element bearings due to the smaller contact area that spherical shapes provide.

A needle roller bearing or needle bearing uses very long and thin cylinder. Since the rollers are thin, the outside diameter of the needle bearing is only slightly larger than the hole in the middle. However, the small-diameter rollers must bend sharply where they contact the races, and thus the needle bearing fatigues relatively quickly.

Linear bearings are designed to provide free motion in one dimension. They are generally comprised of a sleeve-like outer ring and several rows of balls retained by cages. Linear bearings feature smooth motion, low friction, high rigidity and long life. Linear bearings are economical, and easy to maintain and replace.
