Bar code printer have the ability to print barcodes on labels with text and graphics very fast. That is because the printer actually can calculate the barcode, text, and graphic images internally. This allows the computer to send very little data to the printer to print very complicated labels. Every label can be different. You can print one label at a time. You can also print tens of thousands of labels and tags without error and that too very quickly. This feature makes barcode label printers far superior to other type of printers to print variable data on labels or tags.

The most common barcode printers employ one of two different printing technologies. Direct thermal printers, which are generally less expensive, use a printhead to generate heat that causes a chemical reaction in specially designed paper that turns the paper black. Thermal transfer printers also use heat, but instead of reacting the paper, the heat melts a waxy or resin substance on a ribbon that runs over the label or tag material. The heat transfers ink from the ribbon to the paper.

Barcode printers are usually separated into three categories. These categories are industrial, desktop, and portable bar code printer. Industrial barcode printers are used in large warehouses and manufacturing facilities. They have large paper capacities, operate faster and have a longer service life. For retail and office environments, desktop barcode printer are most common. Desktop bar code printer are generally smaller than industrial barcode printers. They hold less labels and are less expensive. Many desktop barcode printers are direct thermal, uses direct thermal labels or tags. A few are thermal transfer, uses thermal transfer ribbon. Portable barcode printers are usually even smaller then desktop barcode printers. They run on batteries and must be charged in between uses.
