Sealants are adhesive in nature and used to close small openings that are difficult to shut with other materials and between two surfaces to contain leaks like those on concrete roofing, drywall, etc. Desirable properties of sealants include insolubility, corrosion resistance, and adhesion. Uses of sealants vary widely and sealants are used in many industries - for example, construction, automotive and aerospace industries.

Silicone sealant and silicone adhesives are based on tough silicone elastomeric technology. Silicone sealant commonly use to seal gaps, joints and crevices in buildings. To make a very smooth silicone sealant, apart from masking the edges with tape, if practical, professional caulkers often wet wooden spoons and assorted, hand-crafted wooden tools, which they soak in water with diluted dishsoap. The silicone will not stick to wet, soapy wood, which makes this ideal for creating a perfectly smooth surface. Do-it-yourselfers typically use a moistened finger to trace neat beads into silicone caulking.

The strength and reliability of silicone sealant is widely acknowledged in the construction industry. Automotive body manufacturing plants and paint shops must avoid the presence of all silicones, as a mere hint of its presence in any form can cause severe failures in automotive paints.

Dental sealants are a dental treatment consisting of applying a plastic material to the chewing surfaces of one or more teeth, for the purpose of preventing dental caries (cavities) or other forms of tooth decay. Dental sealants can provide 100% protection from dental decay or "cavities" on the chewing surface. Research has shown that when placed over very minimal dental decay, the decay will no longer progress.

The potential to develop pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But some adults at high risk of decay can benefit from dental sealants as well. Dentist can tell you if you would benefit from dental sealants.
