Scrubber

Air scrubber, wet scrubber, dry scrubber and gas scrubber are air pollution control devices that use a high-energy liquid spray to remove aerosol and gaseous pollutants from an air stream. The gases are removed either by absorption or chemical reaction.

Scrubber is usually installed on the exhaust chimneys of large furnaces, but may also be used on any number of other air exhaust systems. When the exhaust gases of combustion contain large amounts of substances considered harmful to the environment, the job of the cleaning equipment starts. An air scrubber either removes those substances from the exhaust gas stream, or neutralizes the harmful substances so that they cannot do any harm once emitted into the environment as part of the exhaust gas stream. A carbon scrubber, which is useful as air pollution control equipment, is used at times to make the air free from various pollutants and dust particles. Removal efficiency of pollutants is improved by increasing residence time in the scrubber or by the increase of surface area of the scrubber solution by the use of sprays, packed towers or a venture. One common form of scrubbing is a horizontal scrubber. The main aim of this gas scrubber is to neutralize corrosive vaporized acids that create smog, and can cause acid rain, that eats away at sculptures and stonework, in the exhaust steam.

A wet scrubber is used to clean air or other gases of various pollutants and dust particles. Wet scrubber works via the contact of target compounds or particulate matter with the scrubbing solution. Solutions may simply be water (for dust) or complex solutions of reagents that specifically target certain compounds. Wet scrubber often significantly increases the proportion of water in waste gases of industrial processes which can be seen in a stack plume.

A dry or semi-dry scrubber, unlike the wet scrubber, does not saturate with moisture the flue gas stream that is being treated. Dry scrubber does not have a stack steam plume or wastewater handling/disposal requirements. Dry scrubber systems are used to remove acid gases (such as so2 and hcl) primarily from combustion sources.

Air scrubber, wet scrubber, and gas scrubber are commonly used to help control emissions of sulfur into the atmosphere. This is of particular interest to those involved with electric power generation via combustion of coal. The gases that are emitted from the combustion process are passed through tanks containing a lime substance that can capture and neutralize the sulfur dioxide.

Gas scrubbers are mainly applied in the chemical - and pharmaceutical industry, detritus combustion installation, on - and transshipment of chemicals and surface treatment.
