Teflon products, housewives' best friends! Teflon, a trademark used for polymer of tetrafluoroethylene (polytetrafluoroethylene), is a white, opaque, solid with a waxy appearance, employed as a coating on cooking utensils and in industrial applications to prevent sticking. Polytetrafluoroethylene teflon has excellent chemical resistance properties. Thus, they are used for many applications like in biology, microbiology, medicine, pharmacy and food industry. Polytetrafluoroethylene(ptfe) is a synthetic fluoropolymer which finds numerous applications. Polytetrafluoroethylene's most well known trademark in the industry is the dupont brand name teflon, as dupont initially discovered polytetrafluoroethylene. Ptfe has an extremely low coefficient of friction and is used as a non-stick teflon coating for pans and other cookware. It is very non-reactive, and so is often used in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive chemicals. Where used as a lubricant, polytetrafluoroethylene significantly reduces friction, wear and energy consumption of machinery. Teflon is a tough, waxy, nonflammable organic compound with a slippery surface, attacked by very few chemicals and stable over a wide temperature range. It is a self-lubricant and a tough flexible material of moderate tensile strength. It is an outstanding electrical insulator. It is insoluble in everything, except fluorocarbon oils at very high temperatures. Teflon has excellent "non-stick" properties and a high chemical resistance to everything, except molten alkali metals and fluorine. They are provided with good thermal stability & good weather resistance. Its qualities make it useful in wire coatings, gaskets, holders and spacers, bearings, container and pipe linings, pump parts, lab equipments, electrical insulation, parts for valves and pumps used for corrosive fluids, and protective nonstick teflon coating on cooking utensils, low friction linings for hoppers, diaphragms for low temperature equipment, saw blades, and other articles. Teflon is also used in a different form to keep stains off carpets and clothing. A closely related fluorocarbon polymer, fluorinated ethylene-propylene (fep), has properties and applications similar to those of teflon. With these benefits, teflon products also have their dark side. Chemicals of teflon such as ammonium perfluorooctanoate, known as c-8, have been linked to cancer, organ damage and other health effects in tests on laboratory animals. In two to five minutes on a conventional stovetop, cookware with teflon coating and other non-stick surfaces can exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and emits toxic particles and gases linked to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pet bird deaths and an unknown number of human illnesses each year, according to tests commissioned by environmental working group. If you buy clothing with teflon coating or something else that protects it from dirt and stains, those chemicals can absorb directly through the skin. But still teflon is a product advertised as making life easy. And dupont calls these products the housewives' best friend.
