The purpose of dehulling is to remove the major part of the fiber and a group of pigments which, passing into the meal, would lower its feeding value. The overall dehulling process includes cooking, dehulling itself and separation of the hulls. The dehulling itself takes place in a disc mill, in which the disc spacing and the rotational speed can be varied. For production of high protein meal it is important that good dehulling operations carried out. Careful drying of the beans and tempering them is essential to enhance quality of the dehulling operation. Multiaspirators and efficient screen seperators ensure that the meat produced has very low fibre. The hulls produced are ground and pelletised in special machines. Pellets of 6-8 mm. Are produced which find good acceptability in feed mills. Correctly performed, dehulling yields completely separated fractions of hulls and meats.
