The replicast process for steel and stainless steel castings was developed by cti about 14 years ago. It extends the weight range of the investment (lost wax) casting process to heavier castings up to 600 kg. Instead of using a wax pattern, a highdensity polystyrene or styrofoam pattern is substituted. This enables enen larger, near-net shape products to be made cost competitve sand casings. Replicast casting are typically 25%higher than a sand cast equvalent, which not only enables savings to be made in their manufacture. But also leads to machining cost saving of 45% or more. By changing heavier steel and stainless steelcastings from sand moulding to the replicast process, customers can expect a number of benefits: near-net-shape castings, with high dimensional accuracy and repeatability. This characteristic allows casting to be made with significanlty reduced machining allowances, cast holes and munimum wall thickness without draft angle, resulting in a reduction of machining time and hence the total cost of the component.
